Back-to-school time is always exciting and a bit overwhelming. You are trying to solidify routines, get to know your students, and of course, teach engaging and effective lessons. Teaching sentence types is a crucial lesson to build the needed foundation for a year of successful writing and reading. Here are 4 sentence types of lessons to teach THIS September.
Types of Sentences
As we all know, there are 4 types of sentences. It’s important to teach each of the four explicitly so that students are able to differentiate as the year progresses. This helps with fluency and comprehension.
- Statement: A sentence that states or tells you about something and ends with a period.
- Question: A sentence that asks something and ends with a question mark.
- Exclamation: A strong statement with emotion or excitement and ends with an exclamation mark.
- Command: A sentence that tells someone to do something and ends in a period.
Sentence Types Lesson Ideas
There are so many fun activities you could use to help teach different sentence types. After introducing the different types of sentences using a PowerPoint, here are some of my favorite activities to review or reinforce the concept.
1. Sentence Types Anchor Charts
2. Four Corners
For this activity, I label each corner of my room as a different sentence type. I then project different sentences on the board and the students get to move to the right corner. It’s a simple, low-prep activity that allows students to get up and move!
Psst: After this group activity, you can then check for individual understanding and provide reading practice with the help of this Sentence Type Practice Worksheet in my bundle. It’s the perfect exit slip!
3. Around The Room
I love using around-the-room activities as they are student-led and allow for some freedom. Make your task cards do double duty by hanging them around the room.
Another way to do it is to simply place different types of sentences on strips of paper around the room and give students a recording sheet to write their answers. You can also use this FREE Sentence Sorting Game for this.
You can differentiate this activity by having different levels/colors of sentences available for different levels of readers. Example: The green reading group will only do numbers 1-5 while the red reading group will find numbers 5-10.
4. Book Scavenger Hunt
Book scavenger hunts are great for showing students “real-life” examples of the desired skill. For this activity, all you need are some sticky notes and a stack of books. Students can then choose a book and identify different types of sentences throughout. They can label the types with their sticky notes.
After the scavenger hunt time runs out, you can call on students to share what they found!
5. In Context (Reading & Writing)
And finally, it’s crucial to practice the skill in context via reading AND writing. Inside my Sentence Types bundle, you’ll find Grammar Gazette activities that allow students to identify the sentence types in a news article and then write their own news article using the sentence types they have learned about.
