Finding ways to combat the notorious “summer slide” can be difficult when it comes to teaching grammar to your new students when you go back to school. Taking time at the start of the 2nd grade school year to review and practice 1st grade grammar and language standards is critical to building a strong foundation for learning. In this post, I’ll share a sneak peek into my Back to School Grammar Review resource for 2nd grade. I’ll also give some tips for developing a weekly grammar routine early in the school year.
Back to School Grammar Review
Teaching a quick and effective back to school grammar review is a great way to kick start the school year. Use my week-long Back to School Grammar Review unit to help your brand new second graders review and recall knowledge about nouns, verbs, and adjectives.
This resource includes an entire week of review activities, worksheets, PowerPoint lessons, task cards, and an assessment. Students review sentences and parts of speech with short, targeted daily practice in a variety of formats. The unit follows a simple, 5-day routine that allows you to teach, practice, and assess your students in 15 minutes or less each day.
All the activities in this unit are intentionally designed to be very simple, with easy to understand review activities for brand new second graders and easy data collection opportunities for teachers. All of the materials require little to no prep–just make copies and cut a few lines for the task cards!
Interactive Grammar Lesson PowerPoint
At the start of the week, you’ll begin your back to school grammar review by teaching a minilesson with an interactive teaching PowerPoint.
The lesson PowerPoint also includes whole group practice slides with games and moveable parts to reinforce concepts.
Back to School Grammar Review Worksheets
On Day 2, students will have an opportunity to review their learning with a turn-and-talk prompt on the lesson PowerPoint. Then, students will complete a back to school grammar review worksheet independently. There are 2 worksheet options included in this Back to School Grammar Review unit. The worksheets can also be used for morning work or homework.
Grammar Center Task Cards
The third day of the week is designated for grammar centers with task cards. Have students play Roam the Room with partners, or have students complete the task cards independently. They could also be used as whole group practice if you choose to project the task cards on your board.
First Day of School Reading Passage
An engaging reading passage allows students to identify, read, and write nouns, verbs, and adjectives in context with a fun first day of school story. Students will also apply their learning in a writing activity with three different formats for easy differentiation.
Back to School Grammar Review Assessment
On the last day of the week, students are assessed with a short, easy to grade assessment. This assessment will allow you to determine which skills need to be covered further in the upcoming weeks in your grammar lessons.
