Teaching grammar is something that many teachers have a hard time fitting into their already over-scheduled days. I’ve come up with a simple routine that will enable you to teach, practice, and assess your students in 15 minutes or less each day. In this post I’ll show you how to teach 15-minute grammar lessons in second grade.
I’ve created a series of second grade grammar lessons that are easy to implement, engaging for your students, and by the end of the week they will be able to identify target grammar skills, generate examples, and apply the skill in their writing. All of these lessons and activities are designed to take 15 minutes or less each day.
You Really Can Teach Grammar in 15 Minutes A Day
I know you probably have questions so here are the ones I would ask:
Day 1: Introduce the grammar skill
With these no-prep units and daily grammar routine you can teach, practice, and assess your students in 15 minutes or less each day.
On Day 1 you’ll introduce the grammar skill using the lesson slides in teaching PowerPoint. Use the whole group practice slides with moveable parts to reinforce the lesson.
Each lesson and activity is streamlined so none of your instructional minutes are wasted. Students learn and look forward to the weekly routine.
Day 2: Partner Practice Then Practice Independently
On Day 2, you’ll have partners do a quick review together then practice in writing with a grammar worksheet.
These can alo be used for morning work or homework.
What will my students gain? I don’t have time for fluff.
Nope. You don’t. I’ve intentionally kept these units very simple, succinct, and to the point. By the end of the week your students will be able to:
- identify words in the target grammar skill
- generate examples
- apply the grammar skill in their writing
Day 3: Grammar Center Activity
Each unit includes a set of task cards that can be used whole group to play scoot, or added to your literacy centers for additional practice.
What’s inside each unit?
You’ll get an engaging grammar mini lessonwith detailed lesson plan, plus an entire week of no-prep grammar activities with an easy to grade assessment to give on Friday.
Here’s what’s inside each unit:
- a mini lesson on PowerPoint
- interactive practice slides
- daily lesson plans & weekly routine
- practice worksheet
- partner activities
- reading passage
- writing activity
- center activity
- assessment
- grammar poster
Day 4: Students Apply the Skill in Their Writing
Students read a fun grammar based newspaper story and identify words in the target grammar skill.
Easily differentiate with three different formats. Students can write their own newspaper story, or for students who need more guidence, use the word bank version.
Day 5: Assess Your Students
Students are assesse at the end of the week to determine if they can identify words in the target skill, generate words on their own, and apply the skill in their writing.
