Diphthongs Word Mapping Worksheets – SoR

Inside this phonics resource are 90 diphthong word mapping worksheets in five different formats that are science of reading aligned and support the process of orthographic mapping. Using word maps, students learn to make connections between speech sounds (phonemes) and the letter, or letter combinations, that represent them (graphemes).

What’s included in the Diphthongs Word Mapping Worksheets:

Ten differentiated word mapping sheets for the following diphthongs:

• au
• aw
• ew
• oi
• oo (short, as in book)
• oo (long, as in moon)
• ou
• ow (short, as in cow)
• oy

Each diphthong has 10 word mapping pages in 5 different formats, so you can easily differentiate. Also included are 145 picture cards and picture keys with both pictures and words to help you and your students identify a picture name if needed.

How to use the Diphthongs Word Mapping Worksheets:

1. Students say the picture name
2. Students map the word by tapping or clapping the sounds then coloring or covering each circle with a cube, chip, eraser etc.
3. Students graph the word by writing the letter or letters that represent the sounds.
4. Students then write the word and blend the sounds to read the word.

Make it more hands-on by using the included cut and paste letters, letter stamps, bingo dabbers, play dough, magnetic letters, or letter tiles.

Word maps are ideal for small group instruction, literacy centers, interventions, morning work, independent practice, or send-home practice.
