What second grader doesn’t love learning all about animals? Although field trips to the zoo and nature centers are fun, I know they aren’t always feasible. Thankfully, there are many virtual field trips that you can use as engaging animal life cycle activities. Here are 4 of my favorites!
How to take a science virtual field trip
Taking a virtual field trip is an exciting and engaging way for students to learn even more about a topic. It’s especially cool that there are so many amazing places we normally wouldn’t be able to see that we can visit through a virtual field trip!
With just a bit of preparation, you can take your class on a trip they won’t forget. Just choose a virtual field trip that fits your science curriculum and preview it yourself to get familiar. Some of the virtual field trips in this list already have free teacher guides and animal life cycle activities to use with the virtual trip.
Animal Life Cycle Activities: 5 Virtual Field Trips
I hope these 2nd grade virtual field trips are the perfect addition to your animal life cycle activities! Get ready for a fun adventure without even having to leave your classroom!
The American Eagle Foundation website has links to several live-stream eagle cams around the United States as well as detailed facts for students about eagles. The live streams provide up-close views of several different species of eagles nesting.
Life Cycles (Jefferson County Conservation)
The ranger at Jefferson County Conservation Center takes students on an educational life cycle field trip. She starts by discussing the background knowledge and walks students through the life cycle of a plant, ladybug, and frog with the use of models and diagrams.
Then, the ranger heads out on the trail stopping at several different stations. She has guided and engaging questions at each station to help students understand the animal life cycle.
Just in case you can’t make it to the zoo this year, this virtual field trip does a great job engaging students in a trip to the famous San Diego Zoo.
This would be a great field trip to use as an introduction to an animal research project during a plant and animals interdependence unit!
Lighthouse Lab: Chicken Life Cycle
I always love incorporating Next Generation Science videos into my lessons. This video takes students on an adventure to learn about the chicken life cycle.
It’s just over 4 minutes and does a great job showing diagrams, pictures, and videos of each stage. They also have a similar video describing the life cycle of a frog! You can find more animal life cycle activities and ideas in the video’s description.
When learning about the life cycle of animals, it’s also important to include lessons about what animals need. This fun field trip takes students to the California Science Center.
Teacher Ariel visits different ecosystems and teaches students about the needs of specific animals. I especially like this video as it discusses the differences of needs based on the environment.
