Incorporate reading into your science block with these awesome states of matter books for kids!

Our States & Properties of Matter science unit is always a highlight in the school year! There are so many awesome experiments and labs to do, and I love to use great read alouds to introduce some of the topics. During our unit, I also like to provide access to books about matter in our classroom library to help students build on their knowledge during independent reading time. I’ve developed this list of some of the best matter books for kids I’ve found that you’ll definitely want to add to your library, too!

What is matter? It can be a tricky concept for young learners to really grasp. However, this book presents the topic of matter in a clear, simple, and relatable way for students. It’s a perfect matter book for any K-2 classroom library!

I love finding matter books for kids that are actual stories rather than informational texts, and this story didn’t disappoint! Students will love learning about the states of matter from Pearl as she teaches her brother how juice can turn into a frozen freeze pop. by Cindy Rodriguez

This book uses easy-to-understand descriptions and illustrations to explain the properties of gases. There’s also a Spanish version that you can add to your classroom library as well!
