Teaching the life cycle of a frog is always a highlight of my year. My students get so excited to observe the changes and learn about the process. However, securing real tadpoles for the classroom isn’t always doable. The following books and videos about the frog life cycle help to bring your lessons to life without needing live frogs in the class.
Frog Life Cycle Books for Kids
Although we live in a very digital world, it doesn’t get much better than bringing learning to life with the help of a book. Here are my favorite books to use when teaching about the life cycle of a frog!
Non-fiction Books for Teaching the Life Cycle of a Frog
Non-fiction books are great as they allow students to learn real facts while checking out the photographs. They then can be used as a tool during the whole unit!
1. The Life Cycle of a Frog
by, Bobbie Kalman
The Life Cycle of a Frog is an informative, yet age-appropriate text to supplement your lessons. In addition to the vibrant photographs, the text shares many interesting facts that aren’t always discussed. I especially love the comparison between the metamorphosis of northern and southern hemisphere frogs. I found this to be a fun way to connect science to geography!
3. Nat Geo Kids: Frogs!
This is a great introductory book to the world of non-fiction! It has just the right amount of information for lower elementary kiddos and they will love identifying the different types of frogs labeled throughout.
4. Starting Life: Frogs
by, Claire Llewellyn
Claire Llewellyn does a fantastic job of making this non-fiction text come to life. With the help of full-page illustrations and fun facts throughout, Starting Life: Frogs is a great way to start or end your Life Cycle unit.
5. Nat Geo Kids: Tadpole to Frog
Another Nat Geo Kids gem, Tadpole to Frog dives into a bit more details than the first on this list and is a great addition to your unit. It’s a level 1 reader so it can easily be added to your class library after the read-aloud as well! My students always love the interactive aspects of this book.
6. From Tadpole to Frog Scholastic Reader
by, Kathleen Weidner Zoehfeld
Another great Level 1 Reader, this book explores introductory topics that invite students to want to learn more about frogs and their life cycle! The Find Out More section is fun for students who want to practice identifying different types of frogs, while the included map is great for making connections to your home state.
by Mary R. Dunn
Aimed at young readers, A Frog’s Life Cycle takes a detailed yet accessible look at the stages of a frog’s life, from egg to tadpole, and then from tadpole to adult frog. Dunn’s writing is clear and engaging, making complex biological concepts understandable for children.
8. Everything You Need to Know About Frogs
by, DK
This a fun one as it is not only jam-packed with facts about frogs but also other reptile and amphibian creatures! Do I see a new research project on the horizon? It invites all sorts of conversations in regard to the similarities and differences of these slippery creatures.
Fun Picture Books About Frogs
Fiction stories bring another level of excitement to any unit. These fun picture books about frogs are a great way to compare and contrast what your students have already learned and make connections to the non-fiction stories above.
by, Sandy Asher
Too Many Frogs is a fun read-aloud that follows Froggie and Rabbit’s unexpected friendship. With the use of humor and repetitive language, this will surely become a fan favorite in your class!
10. Frog and Toad Collection
by, Arnold Lobel
The Frog and Toad books are great options to have available for read-to-self time during your Frog life cycle unit. They are Level Two I Can Read books and are perfect for your beginner to intermediate readers in your 2nd-grade classroom. They are lighthearted and fun stories about two best friends.
11. 999 Tadpoles
by Ken Kimura
A lesser-known story, 999 Tadpoles is a great conversation starter to encourage students to research and learn more about frogs. The fun illustrations and simple storyline make it a quick and easy read-aloud!
by Dave Petty
A personal favorite of mine, I Don’t Want To Be A Frog is a great addition to your frog unit AND your social-emotional book collection. This light-hearted story can lead to great discussions about the value of our uniqueness and thinking positively about ourselves. Plus, it’s so fun to read it using funny character voices!

As much as I love books, there’s no denying the usefulness of videos, especially in today’s day and age. With a quick Google search, you’ll have a plethora of high-engagement videos to aid in teaching the life cycle of a frog. Here are some of the best!
13. The Life Cycle of a Frog: Metamorphosis from Tadpole to Frog for Kids – FreeSchool

14. The Life Cycle of a Frog! The Dr. Binocs Show
The Dr. Binocs Show does a great job teaching about the life cycle of a frog in a fun and animated way. Although there are no real photographs or videos in this one, it’s great to supplement it with another video or a nonfiction text. My students always seem to be very engaged with the cartoon aspect of Dr. Binocs.
