Math About Me & Some Goal Setting Fun!

 
Getting to know your new students and setting new goals for learning are tow important things every teacher does, starting on the first day of school.  These fun getting to know you and goal setting ideas will delight your students and help you learn a little more about them right from the start.

Math About Me: Getting to Know You Through Math

Here’s a fun way to get to know your students by having them describe themselves using math. It also is a great way to help students see that math is all around us and we use it every day.

First, I send home a math autobiography page for parents to help their student fill out at home. This way all of the information is at their fingertips.

With it I send a parent note explaining the the activity and how we’ll use this information to describe ourselves using math.

Once they’ve all been returned, I project this lesson visual/chart to model for students how to use the information on their math autobiography to describe themselves.  I model descriptive sentences, math problems, number bonds, word problems, and drawings.

Students then make the circle map body to make their craft.

We reintroduce circle maps to our primary grades during the first week of school and then introduce the other 7 basic ones throughout the first quarter.  This little craft ties in perfectly and also makes a fun family math night activity.

I have students lay their math about me on their desks then roam the room to find friends who have the same number of siblings, same bedtime and anything else they may have in common.

Back to School Goal Setting

Setting learning goals at the start of the year helps to keep student motivated and gives important insight to the teacher on places you can offer extra support. To set our learning goals for a brand new school year, we make these goal setting guys and gals.

Students make a child that looks like them and write their goals inside the flap booklet body.  This is my all-time favorite one!

I display these bright and colorful kids all year. During our last week of school I take them down. Before I send them home though, we revisit our goals and celebrate our accomplishments.

During an Olympics year, we make goal setters wearing gold medals!
