There are lots of ways to get more use out of your grammar worksheets and make them more engaging. Here are some of my top ideas for new ways to use grammar worksheets.

Use Page Protectors with Markers

Sometimes just changing one small aspect of a worksheet can make all the difference in student engagement. Place the worksheet in a page protector and have students complete it using dry erase or Mr. Sketch markers. Mr. Sketch markers are water-based and easily wipe off with a damp paper towel. No more mudgy pages and you can reuse the page protector for another activity.

Upload Your Grammar Worksheets to Google Slides

Why not make your grammar worksheet into a virtual assignment by uploading it to Google Slides and adding text boxes? My students love virtual assignments, and I like to mix it up a little bit sometimes. It’s super easy to upload a worksheet you already have into Google Slides. Then, a few text boxes will make it ready to share with students!

Project for Whole Group Practice

Instead of using worksheets as independent practice, try projecting the worksheet on your smart board and completing it as whole group practice instead. Place students in teams and have them work together to decide on the answers. Another option is to go through each question on the worksheet and have students write their answer on their whiteboards. Have students hold up their whiteboards by calling out, “Ready, set, share!”.

Use Your Grammar Worksheets for Morning Work or Homework

Another way to get more use out of a worksheet is to use it as morning work practice or as homework. If you have multiple worksheets covering the same grammar skill, this is an excellent option. Morning work is a great opportunity for reviewing skills.

Grammar Worksheets Make Great Quick Assessments

If you need a quick assessment for the gradebook, why not use one of those grammar worksheets you have? Sometimes I just want to see how my students are doing with the grammar skill we’re working on, so I’ll just use it as a short, quick assessment. Even if you just need a temperature check on how your students are grasping a concept, worksheets can be great for that!

Turn it Into Roam the Room

Worksheets can easily be made more exciting when you give students an opportunity to get up and moving. I like to cut my worksheets into pieces and post them around the room for students to “Roam the Room” and answer on a separate paper.

This can be super helpful with chunking the work as well, since sometimes worksheets can look a little overwhelming to some of my students!

Flip the Script & Give Students the Answers

I create answer keys for all of the worksheets that I use, so sometimes I’ll try to get more student buy-in by giving students the answers and having them tell me what the question is. You could do this verbally as a whole group activity, or you could cut your answer key into separate pieces and post them around the room. Either way, this is guaranteed to get your students more engaged!

Make It Partner or Group Work

Usually I think of worksheets as being independent practice, but one way to get students a little more excited about them is to make the worksheets into group work. You could even add an extra element of fun by turning it into a little competition—each team who gets a correct answer wins a point!
