Need ideas for no-prep commas in a series activities? In this post, I’ll share 6 easy activities to use when you teach commas in a series in second grade.
Commas in a Series Activities
Teaching commas is a huge grammar concept throughout the elementary grades. Students will need plenty of opportunities to practice this crucial skill.
We use commas to separate three or more words in a list, or series. During your lessons on commas, provide plenty of opportunities for activities that will help your students practice this skill.
Try these 6 ideas for teaching and practicing commas in a series.
Interactive PowerPoints for Commas in a Series
Start by introducing the skill with an interactive PowerPoint. A short mini-lesson on commas and how they are used will give students a grasp on the concept and help prepare them for further activities.
Also, include interactive slides with moveable pieces to model and practice as a whole group. This will help students stay engaged and involved. Additionally, give students opportunities to build their understanding by working with partners to review and practice together.
Commas in a Series Reading Passages
Help students reinforce their understanding of commas by having them find examples or add in commas in a reading passage. This allows students to see how commas are used in context.
In my grammar lessons, I always take one day a week to have students read a short pretend news story that contains that week’s grammar skill. We call it our Grammar Gazette. My students love seeing the week’s grammar skill in action as they read the news story!
Read Alouds with Examples of Commas in a Series
Using read alouds is a great way to show students how skills are used by writers in real life. Students get to see how commas in a series are used in context, and they can use these examples to help them in their own writing.

Eats, Shoots & Leaves demonstrates the importance of correct comma placement by showing how it can completely change the meaning of a sentence.
Dear Mrs. LaRue by Mark Teague
Dear Mrs. LaRue is a silly story with an abundance of commas. This authentic text will show students real life examples of how writers use commas.
The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt
The Day the Crayons Quit is a fun read aloud that my students always adore. It’s also great for teaching commas in a series, because several letters from the crayons include lists of things they are used to color.
Commas Practice Worksheets
Have students practice using commas with a practice worksheet. In order to have students focus on using commas in a series, I give them a list of objects or names. Then, students write their own sentences including the list I gave them. This allows students to practice using commas in a series in their own writing.

Task Cards with Commas in a Series Activities
Task cards are a super versatile activity to use in the classroom. There are so many ways to incorporate task cards and make them work for your needs. Try using them as a center activity, or post the task cards around the classroom for students to do a Roam the Room activity. You can also use them for a whole group activity by projecting them on your board or using them to play Scoot.
Your task cards should allow students to identify examples and nonexamples of correct comma usage. Provide a correct and incorrect sentence for students and have them choose which sentence uses commas correctly.
Easy to Grade Assessments
Finish your week of commas in a series activities with a brief, targeted assessment that allows students to demonstrate their mastery of the skill.
A strong assessment will allow students to identify where commas are needed, generate examples of sentences that include commas, and apply the skill to their own writing.
