Valentine's Day Classroom Party Ideas

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner I wanted to give you a few classroom party ideas and some easy ways that you can make it educational! Maybe your admin isn’t a big fan of having parties in 2nd or 3rd grade? Or, maybe he or she is all in! Either way, here are some educational Valentine’s Day classroom party ideas your students AND your principal will love!

Add some LOVE to your literacy block

Teach a quick mini lesson about the history of Valentine’s Day and I’ll bet your students will be surprised by how long Valentine’s Day as been celebrated!

Make a list of valentine-themed words for students to work with to count syllables, determine parts of speech, and work with spelling patterns. The word “valentine” offers a good teachable moment to add a quick grammar lesson. Have your students define a valentine and challenge them to think of sentences using the word valentine as both a noun and an adjective.

Take Valentine’s Day photos

Take pictures of your students forming a heart with their hands and get your class writing! Have your students write about ways to show they care and make an easy Valentine’s Day craft. Kids love using their own pictures and these make an easy February bulletin board. I take the pictures from the waist up and print them in black and white 5 x 7, or set my home printer at 2 per page.

Have a Valentine’s Day Math Party

During your math block, let your students rotate to different tables to play Valentine’s Day themed math games. My teammate and I open our connecting door and students can go between our two rooms to choose an activity. This makes it extra special and gives our kids a chance to move around and provides them with choices.

Make it festive by covering your desks with butcher paper and letting students pick a dollar store trinket once they complete the game. Students love it and it keeps them on task and motivated to finish.

Give Students Valentine Cards & Math To Use With Them

Do you pass out valentines to your students? These FREE student valentine’s add even more math to your party!

Make a Valentine’s Day Bulletin Board

I usually make this in early January, but thought I would include it since it’s also perfect for Valentine’s Day. This 100 Dreams for the World display makes a beautiful project for the MLK Holiday, your 100th day of school, Valentine’s Day, and even for Earth Day. (I’ve been known to make this in January and leave it up through April!)

It’s a perfect project to do with your team or all of the teachers in your hallway. Give each student a heart to write their dream for the world. Display them all together in a wave of hearts that extends down the hall.
