Many teachers don’t have a lot of time to squeeze grammar lessons into their schedule. I’ve created a yearlong 2nd grade grammar curriculum resource that will allow you to teach, practice, and assess grammar in 15 minutes a day. In this post, I’ll give you a look inside a grammar curriculum that can fit any teacher’s busy schedule.
Quick & Effective 2nd Grade Grammar Curriculum
Implementing a 2nd grade grammar curriculum doesn’t have to take a lot of time. I’ve created a yearlong series of 2nd grade grammar lessons and activities that are highly engaging and easy to implement in just 15 minutes a day.
My no-prep 2nd Grade Grammar Curriculum makes teaching grammar simple, quick, and effective. The yearlong bundle includes 37 weeks of no-prep lesson plans and activities that follow a consistent, targeted weekly routine.
This daily grammar practice allows you to teach, practice, and assess all 2nd grade grammar and language standards efficiently with your students.
Weekly Grammar Routine
The lessons in my 2nd Grade Grammar Curriculum are centered around a 5-day routine. Using a simple and straightforward weekly grammar routine is critical when you’re trying to save time. With this routine, students get consistency and they know what’s expected each day. It also helps students get engaged and excited about each day’s activities.
Here’s a quick look at the weekly grammar routine:
Day 1: Minilesson & whole group practice using grammar lesson PowerPoints
Day 2: Partner practice & grammar worksheets
Day 3: Grammar centers
Day 4: Reading passage & writing activity
Day 5: Assessment
Grammar Lesson PowerPoints
On Day 1, you’ll introduce the grammar skill for the week using the lesson slides for that unit. After teaching the skill with a quick minilesson, use the whole group practice slides to reinforce the concept.
The lesson PowerPoints guide students through the weekly grammar routine each week. Each minilesson PowerPoint teaches the target skill and incorporates whole group and partner practice opportunities. These practice slides have moveable parts that allow students to be more interactive with their learning.
Grammar Worksheets
On Day 2, students will work with partners to do a turn-and-talk to review the weekly grammar skill. Then, they will practice the skill by completing a grammar worksheet. These independent practice worksheets are simple and straightforward, so second graders will have no problem completing the activities in the allotted 15 minutes.
The no-prep, easy-to-grade practice worksheets give students opportunities to read, write, and generate examples of the target skill. They also work great for morning work or homework.
My 2nd Grade Grammar Curriculum bundle includes a total of 42 practice worksheets. If you’re looking for some creative ways to incorporate these worksheets, here are some fun ideas!
Grammar Centers
Each unit includes task cards to be used on Day 3. There are several options for using the task cards.
The task cards can be done as independent work, or you can use them as a whole group activity by playing Roam the Room or projecting them on your board. Each task card set also includes recording sheets and answer keys.
Reading Passages
On Day 4, students will apply the grammar skill in writing with a reading passage and writing activity.
There are three different formats for easy differentiation. Students can generate their own words for a news story using the weekly grammar skill. For students who need more guidance, provide the word bank version.
Weekly Grammar Assessments
At the end of the week, students take an assessment to demonstrate mastery of the weekly grammar skill. My 2nd Grade Grammar Curriculum bundle has 37 easy-to-grade assessments to go with each unit.
On these assessments, students will identify the grammar skill, generate examples of the skill, and apply the skill in their writing.
