I thought I’d pop in to share a new take on an old favorite and show you our turkey in disguise fun. It’s a great way to get your class engaged in some Thanksgiving writing activities with a twist! I should mention we had the help of one very persuasive pigeon!
A New Twist on An Old Favorite
Pigeon Disguise a Turkey
You see, poor Tom Turkey doesn’t want to be eaten on Thanksgiving so he disguises himself as the Pigeon! In Tom’s opinion, families should eat hot dogs instead of turkey on Thanksgiving.
Tom Turkey asked my students help him by persuading their families to eat hot dogs instead of turkey for their holiday meal!
And according to Tom, hot dogs really are better. My class came up with lots of good reasons why we should eat hot dogs on Thanksgiving! Some of them are hilarious!
First, students brainstormed all of their good reasons to eat hot dogs instead of turkey on this variation of a bubble map. Some of their responses are priceless!
Students can also use the digital version on any device.
Then, they chose their three best reasons and wrote them inside of their booklets. Everyone explained in detail why these reasons were good ones.
For students learning remotely, they can disguise their turkey digitally.
The sunglasses get me every time! Ha!
Turkey in Disguise
We took it a step further this year after I added some fun publishing paper. Students wrote these persuasive paragraphs showcasing the reasons why they should eat hot dogs for Thanksgiving dinner.
Our Kinders-across-the-hall love passing by our turkeys in disguise each day. We can hear the giggles inside our classroom whenever they walk by.

Which Pigeon book does this “Turkey in Disguise” activity go with.
I tie the activity to the book, Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog. I read the book the day before and make a bit of a fuss over how much the Pigeon loves hot dogs. When it’s time to disguise our turkeys I and tell my class that Tom Turkey has a great idea! He’s going to disguise himself as the Pigeon and convince families to eat hot dogs instead of turkey on Thanksgiving! We talk about how it’s the perfect plan and everyone knows that Pigeon loves hot dogs. Students are reminded of the connection and think it’s so funny! I hope this helps, and thanks so much for asking!
Oh, my gosh! Too cute! This would be a great addition to my opinion-writing resources!
You're welcome Pam! My class gets the biggest kick out of it!
Oh how I love this! I'm always looking for meaningful ways my kids can share their written opinions, and this is EXACTLY what I need this week!!! Thank you! xo
