Building a solid sight vocabulary in our youngest readers is key to their reading success. I’ve gathered ten adorable color word activities so that your students can practice reading, writing, and spelling based on an adorable book I recently discovered. I highly recommend this read aloud to use while teaching color words, and a fun one to read for Halloween!
Frankencrayon, by Michael C. Hall is a silly tale narrated by a crayon. The cast of costumed crayons are all set to stage a play about a scary monster. Just when the play is about to start, a big scribble appears on the page. As the sotry unfolds, the unexpected scribble grows and grows until it becomes a scribble monster! The scribble monster grows bigger and bigger! As a result, the crayons make a dash for it and the play gets cancelled. But everyone forgot to tell Frankencrayon! While the book is not Halloween specific, it’s a fun one to use in October.
Color Words Activities for Reading
I loved the Frankencrayon character so much I created some color words activities to do with our Kindergarten buddy class. After reading the book, our Kinders made their own Frankencrayons and color word booklets.
Craft and activities source
On the back of the booklets students colored and labeled Frankencrayon’s body parts. Next, students labeled a diagram with the colors they used.
Our Kinder buddies loved their Frankencrayons and we made a bight and colorful hallway display!
We displayed our Frankencrayons and our bulletin board was perfect for Halloween.
After reading the book a second time, we talked about the Scribble Monster that scared all of the crayons. I wondered, “What do you think a Scribble Monster eats?”. After thinking on that, we made a list of colorful foods and added them to our chart.
Color Words Activities for Writng
These matching readers enable students to add their own colorful foods so they can practice writing color words.
To give students lots of opportunities to use these words, I added center activities.
Students spin and color if they land on the Scribble Monster and write the word if they land on Frankencrayon. For student who need help writing letters, the set also includes traceable worksheets.
I hope you’ve found some ideas you can use in your classroom as you introduce color words to your young readers. October is just around the corner and I know your students will love Frankencrayon as much as ours did!
All of these activities can be used with or without the book. Click on any of the pictures in this post or find them in my shop here.
