Butterfly Books for 2nd Grade
Butterflies are such a great example to use to demonstrate a variety of science concepts taught in 2nd grade. My students are always fascinated to learn about the butterfly’s life cycle during our Life Cycles science unit! Butterflies are also pollinators, so they’re relevant when we’re discussing plants in science class as well.
I love to have some awesome butterfly books for 2nd grade on hand during these science units to use as read alouds and for students to read independently. I’ve compiled this list of my top must-have butterfly books for 2nd grade. I hope you find them as useful as I do!

Are You a Butterfly? (Backyard Books)
by Judy Allen
This book is an absolutely adorable read aloud for 2nd grade! It presents the information from the perspective of the caterpillar/butterfly, which makes the story much more engaging for my students. I love that the text is fun, but still gives a ton of important facts about butterflies.
Arabella Miller’s Tiny Caterpillar
by Clare Jarrett
In this super cute rhyming tale, a little girl befriends and cares for a caterpillar. She feeds him and watches him grow until he suddenly disappears into a chrysalis and later transforms into a butterfly. Students will love the vibrant illustrations, poetic language, and fun story that this read aloud book presents!
Pinkalicious and the Little Butterfly

Then I ask questions throughout the book about what Pinkalicious is observing.

The Cat in the Hat is a crowd favorite with students, so this is one of the favorite butterfly books for 2nd grade in my class! The first part of the book describes the life cycle of butterflies and the second part gives details about how they see, eat, and avoid predators. As you might expect with The Cat in the Hat, this text also has a TON of rhyming. Perfect opportunity for ELA connections!
